It was then I realized, most of the (MANY) knobs were off their preset positions. Upon power-up I was a bit disappointed in the audio. The internal PS worked perfect, but I despise heat in modern radios. I made a cable to power the radio via an Icom PS-55. First thing I did was install a Inrad 300Hz CW filter and replaced the CR3022 battery. Instead of the $40 initial shipping estimate, it was $115 and worth every penny! Best packing/shipping I've had in 3,000+ ePay purchases.īack to the radio. It was only one state away (thankfully!). Because the original packaging was long gone, I gave the seller instructions on how I would like the radio packed. Still had the plastic across the display. Just a died in the wool OF.Īnyway, I was so impressed with the FT-920, I started looking at a newer model. OK, for an overview of my station and 'likes', see my preliminary review of one of my recent purchases, a FT-920.Īlthough I have the newer radios like the TS-890 and IC-7610, I really, really like the 'last generation' of radios. The receiver is competitive with anything on bands and transmit, using a Heil Bm-10 headset, will work anything I can hear. Never had a bad report or issue with this radio operating SSB and CW on several HF frequencies. No change in my opinion of this terrific transceiver. This radio requires that you "operate" it, not just push the buttons. If you don't want to devote the time to learn to use it, you won't be happy with the radio. it's really a revolutionary piece of equipment and among the newest batch of radios that are the wave of the future. The FT-2000 is not a "plug and play" radio. The FT2K receiver has many, many features to help that and it takes time and practice to use them effectively. it's about the noise floor and how far above it the signal is. I have also "discovered" that it's not about "S" meter readings. I find that I need to use my amplifier when operating phone more often now that I can hear weak stations that I could not hear before (same antennas). It suits my modes and method of operation to a tee. I can't deny that there have been/are issues yet to be resolved with this radio but, it still outperforms anything else I've owned or operated. I'm taking my time and there is a lot of help available on the related reflectors and from the factory. I can't say the learning curve has been steep because I haven't been in a hurry to master it. All of the updates have been loaded without a problem and it is performing far better than others report about theirs. I've now owned my FT2K for 3 months and have to say that my opinion hasn't changed.
